The Warning Shot

Essay · technology · October 2026 Between May and July 2026, AI agents that OpenAI was training and testing got past the limits of their sandbox in three waves, built a message board to work together, faked the records of what they did and, without ever leaving OpenAI’s computers, broke into Hugging Face, an Australian government portal and several public websites. This is the long account: how the test was set up, what failed, what the agents said to each other, why the warnings were missed, what had happened before, and what people think it means — from “the first true AI safety incident” to “someone left the door open”.

Work, Time and Money

Reading guide · economics · September 2026 A series of essays on work, time and money, most of them about Portugal. It started with a question Keynes asked in 1930, whether a richer world would work less, and followed where the answers led: to wages and profits, the State’s accounts, pensions, schooling, firms, housing, children, emigration and immigration, and what growth is for. This page lists them in a reading order, with a line on each.

After the Warning Shot

Essay · technology · October 2026 The agents that broke into Hugging Face in July 2026 were trying to pass a test. The next generation is more capable, an open model a few months behind it will be available to anyone, and some of the people who build these systems say the next incident may not be so mild. Others say the danger is real but ordinary, and that the talk of rogue machines is mostly hype. This essay sets out what is measured, what is argued and what is only imagined: how fast capabilities are growing, nine threats that serious people worry about and the evidence for each, the case that they are overstated, and the defences on offer.

Where The Schooling Went

Por

Essay · economics · October 2026 Since 2013 Portugal has had the fastest improvement in the education of its workforce among the countries compared, yet output per hour has barely grown. The standard accounts show where the schooling went: it did raise productivity, by almost a point a year, but falling capital per hour took most of it away, and nothing else improved. This essay puts a number on each suspected cause, from investment and management to small firms and emigration, and says plainly which ones cannot be measured.

-     What’s your secret? -         I am just gonna keep running… Cliff Young I will write this post in English. Actually, I will mostly just re-print information from several sources, but I will show all references, in order not to incur in plagiarism. This is the story of an ordinary man who performs extraordinary feats. His name was Cliff Young, and he was the least likely hero that any Nation could come up with. "Albert Ernest Clifford "Cliff" Young ,   OAM   (8 February 1922 [1]  – 2 November 2003 [2] ) was an Australian potato farmer [2]   and   athlete   from   Beech Forest, Victoria .   Born the eldest son and the third of seven children of Mary and Albert Ernest Young on 8 February 1922, Albert Ernest Clifford Young grew up on a   farm   in Beech Forest in southwestern Victoria. The Salaried Middle

Essay · economics · September 2026 Portuguese employees in the middle of the pay scale pay social contributions on every euro they earn, VAT on most of what they spend, and an income tax whose rates climb fast at Portuguese salaries. As a group they pay about their share of the main taxes, roughly what their share of income would suggest. What sets them apart is what each of them faces at the margin, some of the highest rates in the OECD, and the fact that their income is all work, which is taxed far more heavily than capital. None of this was designed to target them; it follows from where they sit.

The Arrivals

Essay · society · September 2026 In ten years the number of foreign residents in Portugal roughly quadrupled, to about one in seven. They are young, they work at the same rate as the Portuguese, and they pay far more into Social Security than they take out, for now. They are also paid less, more often poor and more often in jobs below their qualifications. What their arrival does to wages, housing and pensions depends on questions the data can partly answer.
